“The Pharisees were constantly occupied with the Law (Torah). They counted, classified, weighed and measured all the separate commandments of the moral, ceremonial, and civil law. Through their computations, they had concluded that there were 613 commandments, consisting of 248 positive precepts (…members of the body [bones?])!
Some…considered heavy…some considered light.” [Varner].
- Pharisees must have seen what’s happening, assuming X would be stumped.
- Honest questioner, asking an honest question.
- “What is truly the meaning of life; the meaning of this life.”
- BTW, not an uncommon question.

[Appl] This lawyer is not alone in his quest for meaning. This is a modern question of our younger generation.
What the research says about Gen Z job satisfaction
Gen Z has certainly earned itself a reputation. At worst, they’re perceived as unmotivated, unskilled or a bit contentious. A survey from Resume Builder found that 3 in 4 managers find it difficult to work with Gen Z employees, the top reasons being a lack of motivation, focus and (interestingly) technological skills. At best, they’re seen as innovative, tech-savvy and socially conscious.
- They’re disengaged. A Gallup survey found Gen Z is the most disengaged at work of any generation (54%) and does not feel a close connection to their coworkers, manager or employer. Moreover, they’re the most likely generation (alongside younger millennials) to experience high levels of stress (68%) and burnout (34%).
- They’re exhausted. Similarly, Deloitte reports that 36% of Gen Z employees experience exhaustion or low energy at work. 35% say they’re mentally distanced from their job and harbor feelings of negativity or cynicism toward work. Possibly as a result, more than 4 out of 10 Gen Z employees say they struggle to perform to the best of their ability.
- They’re willing to job hop. And if Gen Z is unhappy at their workplace, they don’t hesitate to quit (or “quiet quit”) and find something new. According to a survey from Bankrate, 78% of Gen Z employees say they will search for a new job in the coming year.
At its core, this may be a story about each generation’s differing expectations. The New York Times describes Gen Z demands that older employees find baffling: paid time off for anxiety and period cramps, displaying gender pronouns in Slack profiles or flexible working hours.
[Appl] This is a problem within our age. Gen Z’ers see the futility of work-o-holism but conclude the answer is not to work, whereas both social categories of Boomers, Millennial hybrids, and Gen Z busted are missing the bigger picture.
Life’s meaning comes down to hearts, “In relation to our Creator God.” What makes the religious man’s question impossible to answer is when it is framed in terms of work’s righteousness.
When someone uses the Law as a measurement for their own righteousness, then that someone is crushed by all the Law, because perfectly obeying the Law is unachievable, making no one Law better than another.
[Illus] This question’s been asked before. Josephus (1st Cent. Pharisee), said Rabbi Hillel, 50 yrs. Pre-X, was asked same question by Gentile. Promised to convert, if Hillel could boil down whole Law while standing on one foot (mocking question).
Hillel: “What you yourself hate, do not do to you neighbor; this is the whole Law, the rest is commentary, go learn it!”
Reverse Golden Rule, minus single key requirement: Heart change.
[TRANS] This brings us to Jesus’ answer.
- An unassailable answer (vv. 37-40)
X gives an obvious answer to the question, answering w/an unassailable answer.
- When Law is defined by self-achievement it binds, soul.
- When Law is defined by love, it is freeing, transforming.
- w/Clarity and Wisdom, X quotes the one passage from Law, summarizing it all.
- Entirety of Law, by quoting the Shema of Deuteronomy 6.
- Confessional prayer of all Judaism (cf. Mark 12:29 also quotes Dt. 6:4).

- Obeying the Law is synonymous with Love.
- Applied by the heart.
- Heart remade by Conversion.
- The Law was always meant be obeyed in terms of a heart of love for God.
- Love from someone’s whole self.
- Emphasis on word “all” ὅλῃ (Mat 22:37 BGT) which means “whole” and is repeated 3x. “all your heart” “all your soul” and “all you mind” (v. 37).
- Overlapping terms (heart, soul, mind).
- Believers called to hold nothing back in terms of love for God.
- Fruit of true conversion is only satisfying when loving God w/whole self.
- To love the one true God.
- Israel’s God, Yahweh.
- The one God who stands unique in polytheistic culture.

- Christ lists categories to describe the complex inner man.
[Appl] Someone’s “heart” “soul” and “mind” are distinct in terms of description, but all reflect the same source.
Term “heart” nuances affections and “soul” nuances man’s eternal nature and “mind” his thinking bearing the image of God.
Man is not 3 or more parts inside, never trifurcate the inner man.
- Scripture describes man in terms of him having an outer man and inner man.
- The outer man, Paul describes as a tent.
- One day cast off.
- Inner man is eternal.
- The outer man, Paul describes as a tent.
- Jesus leaves “might” out bc/nt his emphasis.
- “might” or “strength” combines outer man.
- Man, both physical and spiritual, always while on earth.
- X’s emphasis is loving God with all your faculties.
- “might” or “strength” combines outer man.
- Over compartmentalizing or Under compartmentalizing love for God leads to error in terms of relating to God.
- Under-emphasizing affections can lead to intellectual pride.
- Over-emphasizing emotions can lead to experientialism.
[Illus] Charismatic movement emphasized the “heart” in terms of feelings and experiences to the detriment of thinking or engaging the mind.
Liberal theology has emphasized an equally dangerous version of stoicism where someone only must engage his mind in his devotion. Social action as a matter of someone’s conscience.
[KEY] True conversion calls for both heart and mind.
- [Quote] Conversion bears fruit of clear understanding of the gospel, complete contrition over sin, joyful engagement to Christ, with the full assurance for your soul.
- Exactly the point of the Shema, why X quotes it.
[KEY] Why X says: “This is the great and first commandment” (v. 38).
[TRANS] Not that he’s asked but X opens the second with verse 39: “And a second is like it: You shall love you neighbor as yourself” (v. 39).
- X ties vertical love w/horizontal love.
- When you have one, you have the other.
- When you love God.
- Self-sacrificial love for your “neighbor” overflows (v. 39).
- “neighbor” meaning the people closest to you.
- Israelite or resident alien (cf. Luke 10:29-37).
- Horizontal application from Leviticus 19:18.
- Assumes you love yourself bt/nt in fleshly sense.
- Inner selfish pull from flesh.
- To be fought against.
- X sites inner pull built within man’s survival instinct.
- Within man, needs met like eating and sleeping.
- Demands everyone naturally prioritizes when otherwise unmet mean disaster.
- Someone’s heart transformed to love God.
- Same heart will (flower) to love others.
- Based on new capacities.
- Meeting others with self-sacrificial love is the fruit of saving grace.

ESV Ephesians 5:28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, (Eph 5:28-29 ESV)
[Appl] 2 years ago, woke agenda miss applied, “Love your neighbor” as leverage to enforce political agendas. Mostly influencing unbelievers by guilt, for causes.
[Stand to Reason, Clear-thinking Xianity, Oct. 2022]
In recent weeks, one California politician running for office launched an ad campaign involving the placement of multiple billboards in several states. The message? Come to California and get an abortion.
One of the billboards is especially offensive due to its misappropriation of Scripture. The sign reads, “Need an abortion? California is ready to help.” In small letters, the ad cites Jesus from the Gospel of Mark: “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment than these” (Mark 12:31). The billboard misrepresents the Scriptures as well as what it means to love.
[Point] God’s great commandments are both ordered (first, second) and symbiotic.
- God-centered love will flow out to others but never to the contradiction of God himself or God’s Word.
- Following X will never be to the neglect of others; never a form of stoicism or solely experientialism.
ESV James 2:26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead. (Jam 2:26 ESV)
[KEY] Finally, X summarizes the entire Law on these two commands.
- Verse 40, “On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets” (v. 40).
- Everything hangs on these vertical and horizontal commands.
- Utter simplicity subsuming all 613 commands!
- This Pharisee’s [Lawyer’s] mind must have been blown away.
- Everything, legal, civil, and ceremonial.
- Every application, every tradition, everything about his entire life boiled down to this level of simplicity.
- Simplicity is why a young child or teenager can be converted.
[Illus] The Gospel, like the ocean can be ventured out in by a child, touching his or her toes in two inches of water in the sand, while massive ocean vessels steam slowly by with massive tonnage and ballast on the distant horizon. Simplicity met with unfathomable depth.
[Illus] Think about the decalogue. The ten commandments while move from the vertical about God to the life commands of the horizontal.
Love God and love neighbor. Commands not only to not be disobeyed by fear of retribution but to be obeyed by love, based on internal transformation.
ESV Romans 13:8-14 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.
9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. (Rom 13:8-14 ESV)
[TRANS] Back to Mark’s account to finish the story about this unlikely convert. Mark records this man’s response.
ESV Mark 12:32 And the scribe said to him, “You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him.
33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions. (Mar 12:32-34 ESV)
- Not far from the kingdom, meaning not far from conversion.
- Literally not far from X himself (see X’s questions, Matt. 22:41-46 next time!)
Conclusion: We do not know whether this “lawyer” “scribe” “pharisee” came to Christ, but we do know he was clear on what X requires.
- All we can ask for when we try to win people to believe in the Savior.
- This man was not far; beginning to see the Law as grace.
[Illus] There was a young man who I led in my time at TMU. He was a remarkable thinker, Ben Shapero like, in wit demeanor and personality.
He was always pretty wound up on Christian debates and had a know reputation for being intimidating to Bible professors, because he knew his Bible.
I would visit with him, finding him reading extra biblical works like the book of Mormon or the New Century Bible, to which he would justify saying, “I want to win others to Christ who are skeptical to my not having read their position.”
This can be understandable when using care and discernment, but his caviler spirit made him vulnerable to his own skeptical heart. He knew the Bible and could debate with skill, but one thing began to concern me and that was that he began to only approach his Bible in terms of willing debates.
One day, I asked him, “Do you realize that you only speak of God and God’s Word in terms of winning controversies?”
He went on to marry, and go to a liberal seminary, to become a liberal pastor. He later boasted that he was the first in his area to marry a gay couple in his church.
I had called him to reach out when I saw he had posted a testimony blog titled: “My un-testimony.”
In our conversation I remember quoting back to him, his favorite quote to me, from John Piper. “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.” I asked if he still believed this, and he sat in silence.
Later, tragically his sister, whom he loved dearly died in a car wreck. The last conversation I had with him expressing condolences found him with nowhere to go (he was left hopeless w/o God).
[Point] No amount of knowledge, performance, and law-keeping will change the heart.
Only hope is to be transformed to love God with our whole selves which will flow into a life of Christlikeness.
Self-sacrificial love that endures to heaven.
Matthew 22:34-36 “Becoming a good Pharisee” pt. 2
Intro: Evangelizing Pharisees might be last possible thing you’d think to find X doing.
- Why?
- Timing: Wednesday, week of X’s execution.
- Will condemn Pharisees w/7 woe judgments.
- Pharisees, Jesus’ known enemies.

- Pharisees, least likely converts, known self-righteous “hypocrites” (synonym).

Paul’s theology
ESV 1 Corinthians 2:14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. (1Co 2:14 ESV)

- Observe their spiritual condition by how responds to truth.

[Illus] Another crowd, in the court of Gentiles called, “a great throng” (Mark 12:37), which make up a massive people, as spectators of this contest, an anti-establishment crowd, ready to crown this temple radical (overturned its money racketeering scam) their new Prince.
Monday: Voters had cast their votes as Jesus over Caesar, over Roman rule.
[Point] X’s agenda was to refocus on a greater need than government reform.
- Higher than temporal; eternal.
- X never satisfied w/an insufficient definition of Messiah.
[Illus] Jew’s common title for Messiah: “Son of David” which for them is another military, nationalistic, political title. Half-Messiah’s
“Who might be enough to finish the conquest David started, to shatter Israel’s enemies and lead the people to the conquest of all nations.” [Barclay]
[KEY] Not enough, for the true Messiah: “Son of David, Son of God.”
- X clearly moving from One being tested to One testing.
- Evangelism, by the Spirit, with humility.
- Holding up the Word, putting every man’s conscience to the test.
Christ offers the Gospel to these Pharisees by asking this series of questions.

[KEY] Answer X’s very specific question is obvious:
- “They said to him, ‘The son of David’” (v. 42).
- Both theological.
- And logical.
[Illus] If question regarding X’s connection to King David’s line, X would have been immediately dismissed. Religious leaders would lose interest. Unthreatened.
X’s genealogies, both Joseph and Mary, completely legit. Both paternally and ethnically w/out curse of sin.
Pharisees, believed X angling for them to see how X was Messiah as David’s great, great, great, grandson. A son from David’s physical line.
[KEY] Though X is outside their box, He qualified; but not what Pharisees and Hoi Polloi wanted.
- Not their Messiah, how he responded to his questioners.
- Messiah, reaching hearts.
- Still, qualified as Davidic Prince, Messiah.
- Believing in X, only at this level is never enough.
- Messiah, reaching hearts.
[Appl] Concerned w/cultural blurring of theological lines w/cultural agendas.
[Appl] Al Mohler’s prophetic comment, predicting American society spiraling as it now is, who at points aligned with Mormons:
“We may not go to heaven together, but we certainly might go to jail together.”
Clever way to fight together, for temporal causes, but this comment has a tragic implication: You might get God half-right. You might get morality half-right. You might get your Bible answers, half-right.
But if you do not get X all the way right, you’re not headed to a Half Hell.
There’s good podcasting warning about the loss of democracy to Marxism and I do not all the disagree w/assessment and outrage.
Still, deeper concern is life after death. Not who we will leave behind but where they will likewise go when they die?
Jesus’ concern is for these Pharisees, along with these onlookers to get Jesus not half right but all the way right.
“The Pharisees had long ago concluded that the Messiah would be a descendant of David (2 Sam. 7:12-16; Micah 5:2; Ps. 132:11). The problem was that it just did not go far enough. Jesus did not deny that the Messiah would be David’s son (Matt. 1:1; 21:19; Luke 1:32)” [Varner].
- A Reasonable Question (vv. 43-44)
[KEY] X’s clean-up questions, paint X as the proverbial spider drawing Pharisees directly inside of his web.
- Important to see X working within the framework of natural and spiritual mindedness.
- Either see X for who he truly is or will not.
- Holy Spirit is opening their eyes or not.
- Will they remain natural or spiritual in their minds?
- Either see X for who he truly is or will not.
- X not aiming to shut the door on their hearts.
- But open them.
- Only way for opening, heart is by Truth.
“If you know the truth, then the truth will set you free” (Jn. 8:32).
“Open my eyes that I will behold wonderful things from your law” (Ps. 119:18).
[Note] Though Israel’s king, David played the role of prophet.
- “David, in the Spirit” (v. 43). Spirit [pveumati/ruach “wind”] of God would come upon or rush upon prophets, giving them the words to say, so David as a prophet spoke by the Spirit.
- X is quoting inspired Scripture, inspired by the Holy Spirit.
- 2 Tim. 3:15 means the Word is as Authoritative as X himself.
- 1 Peter 1:11 points to the Spirit of X being the one who spoke through the prophets.
ESV 1 Peter 1:10-11 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. (1Pe 1:11 ESV) (1Pe 1:10 ESV)
[KEY] X quotes God’s Word to open heaven up to those who might see it.
“The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand” (v. 44).
- Passage is clearly Messianic, affirmed by every orthodox Jew.
- Passage is so clear about X being Messiah.
- Not unlike Isaiah 53.
- It was deemphasized in rabbinic literature for the first 200 years after X.
- Passage is so clear about X being Messiah.
- On contrary, early church referenced 110 again and again.
- Psalm 110 is directly or indirectly 30x by NT writers.
ESV Acts 2:3436 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
35 until I make your enemies your footstool.”‘
36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.” (Act 2:34-36 ESV)
- God himself affirmed X as both Lord and Christ.
ESV Hebrews 1:8 But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. (Heb 1:8 ESV)
ESV Hebrews 1:13 And to which of the angels has he ever said, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? (Heb 1:13 ESV)
[KEY] Meant to be very clear. In quoting Psalm 110:1 the first Lord is God [Yahwey] and second Lord [Adonai] is the Messiah.
- David calls the Messiah Lord, meaning that David as King, paid homage to this Lord.
It is this same “Lord” being addressed in heaven by another Person who is “The Lord.”
David’s personal allegiance is to the One who is the Messiah, addressed by God [the Father].
This by the way is the Trinity portrayed in the OT.
[Appl] Though these questions form a riddle, to the spiritually equipped person, makes clear connection.
[Illus] Martin Luther said as much under the theology of the Holy Spirit. Spiritus Sanctus non est scepticus. The Holy Spirit is not a skeptic.
- Gravity in the Hebrew language with these two different words translated LORD; Lord. Yahaweh is I AM speaking to God’s self-existence and Adonai which means Sovereign.
- Interchangeable names for God, used in Psalm 8:9.
ESV Psalm 8:9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! (Psa 8:9 ESV)
[KEY] The theology of X’s divinity is sealed at the end of Christ’s quotation in verse 44.
- “…until I put your enemies under your feet?” (v. 44).
- Being at God’s right hand is being equal with God.
- Equality expressed by Paul’s exposition of Psalm 110:1.
ESV 1 Corinthians 15:27-28 For “God has put all things in subjection under his feet.” But when it says, “all things are put in subjection,” it is plain that he is excepted who put all things in subjection under him. 28 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all. (1Co 15:27-28 ESV)
[Point] X as Messiah means you take him as Lord, as God.
X is the only one who qualifies.
ESV Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isa 9:6 ESV)
- A Rhetorical Question (vv. 45-46)
[KEY] Question meant to stun the Pharisees but not shut them down.
- Needed a rhetorical question to challenge their thinking.
- [Remember] X’s original question, “What do you think about Christ?” (v. 42).
- Most important question that can be asked.
[TRANS] Cff. Galatians 3:24, the Law was meant to drive (schoolmaster; tutor) them to X;
“Would they recognize him?”
ESV Galatians 3:24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. (Gal 3:24 ESV)
- X’s first question (cf. v. 42) was asked outside the context of Psalm 110:1.
- Now inside X’s teaching:
- “If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?” (v. 45).
[KEY] X not simply winning an argument.
- Bringing hearers to where there’s nowhere else to go but to yield.
- To yield to Truth.
- Is to yield to Christ.
- Obvious answer to rhetorical question is, “He cannot be…” but he is.
[Point] X is the son of David; the son is standing right in front of them.
- At the same time, X is the Lord, sovereign who is fully divine.
- God-man, to be worshipped.
- As King, come to redeem his people.
[TRANS] Verse 46 ends this section and chapter on a somber note.
- Instead of their response being bravery,
ESV Matthew 22:46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions. (Mat 22:46 ESV)
- “no one dar[ed] to ask him any more questions (cf. v. 46).
- Spirit spawn’s bravery to claim to Christ.
- What you see; the Pharisees were stumped.
- Unable to see X as Son of David who is likewise, Son of God.
- Even, believing a half-X is still being wholly lost.
Conclusion: This has been X’s evangelistic Bible Study.
[Question] So, did X fail? Hardly.
But X certainly did not give up on them, though “woes” were coming.

In Wash DC, at a Metro Station, on cold Jan morning, 2007, man with a violin played 6 Bach pieces for 45 mins. During that time people went through station, most on way to work. After 3 mins., middle-aged man noticed musician playing. He slowed pace and stopped for few seconds, then hurried on to meet his schedule. 4 mins later, violinist received the first dollar. A woman threw money in the hat, and without stopping continued to walk. At 10 minutes a 3 year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly.
The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time. This action repeated by several other children, but every parent – without exception – forced their children to move on quickly. At 45 mins the musician played continuously and only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 people gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace. The man collected a total of $32. After an hour he finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed and no one applauded. There was no recognition at all.
No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million, Gibson ex-Huberman Stradivarius (1713).
Two days before, Bell sold out a theater in Boston where seats averaged $100 for people to sit and listen to him play the same music. Bell was incognito, organized by Gene Weingarten from Washington Post as a social experiment on perception and priorities. “In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty?” “Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?”
X, the Messiah, was in the right context, the Temple, for his glory. There as the ultimate Passover Lamb. Predicted, declared Lamb of God. Son of David, Son of God.
[TRANS] Though we are going to hear X’s 7 woes, all was not lost for all Pharisees.
Last week I taught Pharisees who were believers: Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus, and the Apostle Paul.
Who else?
ESV Acts 15:1-5 But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.”
2 And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders about this question.
3 So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, describing in detail the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the brothers.
4 When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they declared all that God had done with them.
5 But some believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees rose up and said, “It is necessary to circumcise them and to order them to keep the law of Moses.” (Act 15:1-5 ESV)
[Question] “Were these Pharisees perfect?”
- No, maybe working through legalism (or helping make compromise for new believers), but they were believers.
- What a redemption story.
[Question] “How do you know you have all of Christ?”
It’s when all you have is Christ, that you know.
When all you have is Christ, then you know He’s your sufficiency.
